Facelift

Facelift surgery is growing in popularity among men in the United States. A male facelift can significantly enhance the look of your face, subtracting years from your appearance. In the business and social worlds of today, many men are becoming more aware of the benefits of a youthful and attractive appearance. It has also become more acceptable for males to be concerned with their aesthetic qualities.

The male facelift is a great way to help fight the undesirable effects of aging, and although the procedure and results are very similar to those of female facelifts, there are some key differences that patients should be aware of.

Candidates For Male Facelift

A good candidate for a male facelift is any man in good physical and psychological health who wants to improve his physical appearance. The male facelift is designed to help minimize the effects of aging faced by men, including droopiness in the face, neck, and jowl area. Men are typically good candidates for a facelift because their skin is often thicker and less wrinkly than a woman's skin, which usually leads to better facelift results.

Men considering a facelift should have realistic expectations of what the procedure can do. You should discuss the desired results with your surgeon to ensure that your goals can be achieved through surgery.

Differences Of A Male Facelift

The overall aim of a male facelift is the same as that of a facelift for women: to achieve a younger, more vivacious appearance. In both male and female facelifts, these results are obtained by first removing fat and excess skin on the face. This is followed by a delicate remodeling of muscles and tissue below the skin's surface. Because men are different than women, however, the male facelift utilizes techniques specifically designed to ensure the best possible results for men.

Since men often do not have the option of concealing scars under their hair, hiding potential scars can be more difficult. Therefore, the incisions made during a male facelift must be placed as strategically and inconspicuously as possible. The incisions are generally made in the natural crease between the ear and the sideburn, inside the ear, around the earlobe, under the chin, or back into the hairline.

Risks Associated With Male Facelift

A successful male facelift can make men look younger and help boost their confidence. Like all surgical procedures, however, the male facelift procedure does have potential risks that patients should be aware of. The most common risks include scarring, nerve damage, and partial facial paralysis. A risk more probable in men than women is blood clotting. Men contain more blood vessels in their face than women, increasing the chance of blood clots after surgery. It is important to note, however, that these complications are rare and can usually be avoided with a qualified surgeon and proper aftercare.

Male facelift patients should expect to be out of work for at least one week following surgery. Also, during the first few weeks of recovery patients should limit their daily activities. This may include (but is not limited to) refraining from work, exercise, strenuous activity, sexual activity, smoking, and the use of certain medications.

Liposuction

Now among the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures, liposuction sculpts the body by removing undesirable fat from areas around the thighs, knees, buttocks, waist, hips, abdomen, chin, cheeks, neck and upper arms. Despite good health and a reasonable level of fitness, some men may still have a body with disproportionate contours due to localized fat deposits. These areas may be due to heredity or family traits rather than a lack of weight control or fitness. Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity or a substitute for proper diet and exercise. Liposuction can, however, permanently reshape body contours where excess fat deposits create areas that are disproportionately large in an otherwise balanced physique.

Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

Although rarely discussed, enlarged male breasts is a common condition.Gynecomastia affects approximately 40 to 60 percent of men. There is often no known cause for gynecomastia, although there has been some correlation with various drugs or medical conditions.

Men who feel self-conscious about their appearance are helped with breast reduction surgery. The procedure removes fat and/or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in extreme cases removes excess skin, resulting in a contoured chest that is flatter and firmer.

Rhinoplasty (Nose Reshaping)

Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed today on both men and women. It can reshape, reduce or augment a person's nose to achieve facial harmony and boost self-confidence. It is also sometimes performed as a reconstructive procedure to correct a birth defect or an injury such as a broken nose. Combining nose reshaping with septoplasty or endoscopic sinus surgery can effectively treat certain breathing problems, such as those caused by a deviated septum.

Rhinoplasty is an excellent procedure for achieving the following:

  • Balance the size of the nose with the other facial features
  • Modify the width of the nose at the bridge
  • Improve the nasal profile, including removing humps or depressions
  • Contour a nasal tip that is too large, "boxy," drooping or upturned
  • Change the angle between the nose and the mouth
  • Narrow and reshape the nostrils
  • Correct asymmetry or deviation

The best candidates for rhinoplasty are at least 13 years old, have finished facial growth, are generally healthy and do not smoke.  It is also important the patients seeking rhinoplasty are doing so for personal reasons and not because of pressure from others.
